Hi Ganga thank you for your feedback. She doesn't want to "take a chance" as on her outward journey 2 of her suitcases were lost never to be found.
Westin again thank you for your comment. The airline is West Jet a Canadian airline. As she is not a canadian citizen they will not allow her to buy travel insurance! I have been told here in the UK that as she has been out of the country for 18 months she is not entitled to buy UK travel insurance either - so stuck with nothing!

The chances of her luggage going missing are slim to non and has been said the airline would be responsible.

I do understand the request for travel/flight insurance.

I have been on three transatlantic flights which diverted due to medical emergencies. One into Gander, one Bangor and one a US air base in the Azores. In each case the passenger taken to be treated in hospital and rest of family offloaded. The costs of these unexpected and unplanned hospital stays, extra lodgings and onward travel when recovered must be high.

A work colleague and his wife also flew back from Orlando a few years ago. He developed chest pains inflight and the BA flight diverted to Bermuda. He thankfully was ok but there was a sizeable medical bill from the ambulance and hospital, his wife’s hotel accommodation, then two flights back from Bermuda a week later. Their travel insurance covered things thankfully.

We all hope these things don’t happen to us and thankfully perhaps rare occurrences when flying. These events do however happen and I can understand the OP’s relative wishing to have insurance cover. It’s not just about lost baggage.

there are a reasonable number of insurers that sell travel insurance to people that are already overseas, World Nomads is one. There is however no such thing as "flight only travel insurance".

Be aware that most of these policies do not provide any cover for the first 3 days or so (to mitigate the risk you are uninsured, break your leg, then buy the policy) so she will need the policy to start at an appropriate date before her return for the return itself to be covered.

Given how expensive healthcare is in Canada I am confused as to how she has been comfortable risking hundreds of thousands in medical bills but concerned about a suitcase being lost?

It's possible that she was covered under one of the NHS style systems used in Canada.  OHIP for instance in Ontario as it varies from province to province instead of being a federal/national responsibility.

As Newark isn't in Canada (with no route specified), I can only agree with this. Insurance wouldn't be required, but proof of any expensive items may be.

Back to being serious, I'd suggest a company like Battleface, as they're known for insuring just about anything at a reasonable price at the moment.
