TravellingAbuela said:Tried to make out what your DM was doing the day I was born GERS 12/3/1946 but cant make it out! That tiny diary is similar to the tiny hand made books the Bronte sisters made and wrote in. Must have needed lots of patience. You have some lovely things to remember your mum by XxI found a document which is a transcription of the diaries (her crossword friend made enlargements many years ago) which was in one of the envelopes I brought back this week.09 March - package from Mum. Taught maths with Fritz Kalkofe. Follow up with Miss Salzeider.14 March - Miss Hanni is free after Christmas. Talking about Latin lessons does not work. (one German word in there doesn't translate easily, it means 'rubbish', can't see the context!
Taff - liver and bacon...I've not had it for so long, perhaps next week as it's in my mind now.

Hi everyone,I'm late too even though I was up at the crack of dawn. Got a call from DS2 at 8 asking if we were on our way? Where ? I asked. Turns out we were meant to pick DGS up from his house to take him to school while he took DGD. DH forgot to tell me
We hastily set off for his house (opposite side of town to school) and came back again and just got him there on time, phew.
I've had a lazy morning but better get on with a tidy I suppose. Trying out meatloaf marinara tonight, a prepped meal from MrT as there is another school run. We need to help out more at the moment as DGS Mummy is recovering in hospital from an op.In the morning mayhem I managed to grab ex SisILs birthday card to post while I was out, reminds me I need to buy some stamps before they go up :oTake care all xx:heartsmil 'A woman is like a teabag: You never know her strength until you drop her in hot water'. Beautiful photos IzzyBee. I love exploring different places. I remember when my late husband was home on leave from Sudan we took the girls, and drove up to Durham, as I kept on about how gorgeous it was there. Whilst wandering around the cathedral I got chatting to a monk in there (as one does
) and he said would I like to see their refrectory ,not one to pass up a chance of a behind the scenes nosey I said yes please and he took me off for a tour.It was amazing and looking at the roof beams in there he was telling me that if you look carefully you can see that they are basically tree trunks and he said they are held up by wooden pegs.
When I looked a bit worried, he nonchalantly said "Don't worry my dear they have stood up for over 1000 years I think they will last a bit longer
Apparently the stone for the building was hauled manaully from a quarry over 40 miles away ,then dragged up the hill to build it. When you think there were no modern equipement to move the stuff ,everything was done by hand, its quite an achievement. Having transported it over 40 miles then having to pull it up the last hill for the building of the place its quite awe-inspiring of those long ago craftsmen. Climbing up the tower itself wore me out and that was in 1983.
When I finally got back to my husband he said where have you been and I said chatting to a monk in his refrectoryHe grinned and said "You would chat to anyone wouldn't you
Well why not, its how you find out about stuff . I've always been facinated with history, and especially old buildings, and no matter where you go you will usually find a good slice of local history in the local church
Justhaving my afternoon cuppa and biscuit, those HM peaut butter cookies are rather nice I must put them away or they will vanish
Cheers chums

Afternoon all. A late one from me today but in truth I haven't really got anything to report. It's the same old, same old.
Weather wise it's been a funny day - grey and calm first thing then the sun came out, briefly, and the wind made a comeback. Quite mild though so I've had all the windows open for a while and the house smells much fresher. If it continues to be milder during the day I'm going to try not having the heating on quite so much, but it will still be needed first thing and in the evenings as it's chilly overnight.
Speaking of windows, I think I need to apologise for starting the flurry of window cleaning and mountaineering!
The fence building over the road has finished (it looks lovely) but now they're having their driveway and front garden paved, so this morning we were treated to the workmen cutting the flagstones and then this afternoon to them tamping them down level. It was like having a personal rendition of the Anvil Chorus.Still, they didn't start too early and have now gone so it's peaceful again.
I changed my mind about baking today as there's still some treats left to have with afternoon cuppas (more than I had thought) so we'll have those first.
Tonight's moussaka is all made up ready to pop in the oven; I've used half the mince base and the other half has gone in the freezer for another time. I just need to decide whether to have cauliflower or sprouts with it. It's no good asking DH which he would like - he'll just say "whichever you fancy".Happy new greenhouse camelot.
Happy new car Gers, glad you arrived home safely. I bet you were pleased to see your garden looking so tidy when you arrived home.
Sounds like you enjoyed your anniversary lunch Scarlet.
I hope DD gets her boiler troubles sorted quickly TA. Enjoy the carvery.
Lovely photos, Izzy. We do have beautiful countryside.
I hope your arm doesn’t protest too much after the booster, Nels.
Happy Birthday to Jackie’s GD Katie. You’re right, where does the time go?
Stick with the 4 afternoons dp1 if that’s what’s right for you at the moment. We don’t want you taking a backward step.
We had egg & chips last night, taff and I also managed a drip-free meal.
Get well wishes to all the poorlies, calming thoughts for those feeling stressed. XBe kind to others and to yourself too.13 -
bellabella - it was another poster who seemed to have a Doctor who wasn't good. Our Doctors are okay - when you can get an appointment.
London_1 - I loved Bury market when we popped there while staying on the outskirts of Manchester.
IzzyBee - lovely photos.
Still having a problem with the downstairs toilet - got so used to not having to climb stairs every time I need a wee.
Been out to HB today to restock my Easter sweets stash to do more fund raising. We were on a bus going home when a dog made me jump by suddenly barking - a chap had fallen to the floor having a fit right next to Mr F - it was one of those support dogs. Poor chap has frequent fits - we chatted to him after he recovered.
Mr F has finished the course of antibiotics for his leg and started the course of antibiotic drops for his ear.Decluttering Achieved - 2023 - 10,364 Decluttering - 2024 - 8,365 August - 0/45
