i'm with barclays, and in their branch they allow you to select your notes.
it popped up in conversation, with a friend, do all banks do this? and also could i pop into say a halifax (eg not my own bank) and still use the ATM in there to withdraw? and to choose my own notes? this i find handy, for getting some fivers for taxis etc, when i know ill be on a night out.

Never seen this feature, but you can of course use any LINK cash machine for free unless the operator sets a charge (no UK banks or building societies do though, to my knowledge).

No, not generally.0

I find in fact it's the opposite - frequently there will be a message to say "no tenners available" thus removing the option to get £30, just £20, £40 etc. I think I've only got fivers out of an ATM once in the last 10 years.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe and Old Style Money Saving boards. https://www.link.co.uk/consumers/locator/ includes a search filter to identify ATMs that dispense £5 notes....

This used to be fairly common in Aus when I was growing up - you used to be able to select any combination of $20 or $50 notes that gave you the correct amount for your withdrawal. Then something changed years back and they took away the feature, so I started (and still do) making withdrawals for $60/$80 when I specifically wanted $20 notes.
It's not something I ever seen in the UK, although I have noticed that a lot of the ATMs around me will give you your first £20 in £10 notes, then the rest in £20 notes. I think I got a few £5 notes from an ATM once (can't recall where, but I was on holiday somewhere in the country I'd never been before) and was very confused.1 -
The devices inside Barclays branches are not ATM’s. They are self service counter devices that can withdraw cash up to £2k, cash/cheque deposits, bill payments and bank transfers. And only work with Barclays accounts. They also don’t do certain things that ATM’s can do, like changing the cards PIN number and unblocking the card. Not really sure if other banks have similar devices to choose what notes you would like.4

My local Lloyds branch has one atm dedicated to issuing just £5 and £10 notes but that's as far as it goes.

There’s a Tesco bank ATM near me which issues £5 notes. However if you want more than one £5 note you have to make multiple withdrawals!0

Some Barclays branches that have ATMs ‘inside’ the branch have older machines that will dispense £5 notes..you don’t need to be a Barclays customer…they don’t allow you to choose the notes but still handy to know0
