Council tax rebate

Hi I recently posted I've been off work sick since December. I've now applied for a council tax reduction as I'm now getting UC and SSP. If this application is successful it would start in April. So will I still get the rebate? Thanks Diane

Are you talking about the £150 the Government announced? If so then yes everyone is band A - D will receive this, even if they don't claim CTR. https://www.gov.uk/government/news/households-urged-to-get-ready-for-150-council-tax-rebate

If you are referring to the £150 rebate then arrangements will be made for all people who qualify to receive the rebate even if they are paying no or less than £150 council tax following existing support.
(As I understand it is simply a financial payment - not a reduction on the council tax bill.)

If in Scotland it's a reduction on the CT bill, my council have already taken it off and reduced the monthly payment.
Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.

That may be what will happen in England and Wales too - I'm not clear. We'll know soon enough when the new bills come through.

Whether councils stick to it or not I don't know but its very clear here you will get the £150 paid into the bank your DD comes from if you have one set up

That was how I read it which is why I am not expecting a deduction on the CT bill. Which is logical as the stated purpose is to help people pay their fuel bills now.

I've had my council tax bill already and didn't have the £150 reduction so i'm expecting it as a payment into my bank.

Thanks for your replies. My thinking was if I don't pay my council tax in April because  I've got a reduction because I'm sick I wouldn't perhaps qualify for the £150 as I'm not paying anything as people who don't pay council tax because they also get benefits won't get the £150. Will they take into account that prior to April I did pay my full council tax?

    Yes they will.

It is a £150 payment which is being distributed through the Council Tax system. The payment itself Really has nothing to do with Council Tax itself other than in establishing eligibility. The government describe it as a Support for Energy Bills Payment. Describing it as a Council Tax rebate confuses the issue.

    From the guidance linked upthread:
"11. … the government expects billing authorities to provide a £150 one-off payment to a liable council tax payer (or a person who would otherwise be liable where the property is exempt) for every household that occupies a property …

    12. This means that:

    • A property that meets all the criteria, but has a nil council tax liability as a result of local council tax support, will be eligible."
So yes, although you receive CT support and have no council tax to pay, you still qualify.
