What would happen to our network?
Wouldn't air locks cause big problems?
I assume that smart meters would kick in and ration gas but how would they decide to whom and when?

If I was half as smart as I think I am - I'd be twice as smart as I REALLY am.

The gas isn't piped directly to your house; it's held in big storage tanks and distributed from there.

Russian oil and gas isn't the only thing feeding our network.
The first thing is that big industrial gas users (cement works and the like) will be cut off.
Then gas-fired electricity generation will be restricted, which will mean big industrial electricity users will be cut off.
Domestic gas and electricity supplies are a long way down the list.

Yes but there must be thousands of miles of pipes to get airlocks in?

Uk Gas demand is under 3-5% Russian, without looking it up Im not sure if its piped from Germany or from LNG on ships, the price from Norway 60% of our supply would shoot up as Germany would need/want it and be willing to pay more.

I mean air in the system - between homes and the source
Not in my own home - but further out

That won’t happen on a gas network.

So - they would choose to sell our own souced gas to Germany at a profit before selling it to UK residents ?
That Sky article assumes that UK will still have access to Russian Gas - which may not be fact - if the did shut down the pipeline

OK So what woul happen if they remotely disconnected a large number of properties (ratoning) without any warning - and then 6 hours later turned it back on again - I am sure that many older pieces of equipment without safety shut offs would be problematic- maybe even dangerous - my first property had a gas fire without any shut off - and if the gas went off and back on again - the house would have filled with gas ...
You cant rely on people to follow instriuctons and turn fires etc off
