thanks for the info. i'd read Ecotricity aren't subject to the cap and hoped we would be able to switch supplier. i'm curious as to why you think "most suppliers" won't take us on as new customers? what's the reason behind that?Gerry1 said:Msrajjc2 said:i'm in a similar position to OP, expecting to complete end of May. the person we're buying from is on a variable tariff with Ecotricity. i've got some quotes from all the well-known comparison websites but there are barely any deals. i imagine once we've moved in, come May, there will be more deals available?Ecotricity are not subject to the cap and will be very expensive. You'll probably find Ofgem's new capped rate will be cheaper. Most suppliers won't take you on as a new customer, at least on the SVT. At the moment EDF will, but only if you phone them. Their customer service is notoriously poor, but any port in a storm !
my plan was to switch to a different provider on a fixed tariff as soon as we move in, but are you suggesting that won't be possible? Many (probably most) suppliers won't take you on at least on the SVT, because it would be loss making. Some aren't taking new customers full stop, some are only offering 'Go Away' tariffs at what seem crazily high prices today but may seem bargain basement prices in a few weeks or a few months. As stated, EDF will play ball at the moment but that may not last, or Ofgem may clamp down and tell everyone to do so. Nobody knows.Whatever you do will be a gamble: things may be very different in May and even more different in October.1 -
ok--thanks for the info. my understanding is that, in any event, we cannot secure / proceed with a supplier / deal until we have actually moved in / have a confirmed completion / move in date?Gerry1 said:Msrajjc2 said:

You might be able to get onto the Ecotricity standard tariff which should (hopefully) be cheaper than the fixed deals being quoted on their website as they can’t force you onto a fixed deal.Msrajjc2 said:

we used the generic quote tool on Ecotricitiy's website and it said £250 a month, which is more than double what the owner is currently paying (£100).

Does anyone know what the difference is between the Standard tariff and the Standard (out of contract) tariff? I was trying to figure out which one @Msrajjc2 would be placed onto when they move in.
My take on it is if you had a fixed deal you’ll be moved onto Standard (out of contract). Where as if you are just moving in for example you’ll be on Standard?
