Moving house End of April 2022 - Gas/Electricity Help

We are moving into our new house on the 29th of April and with everything changing with Gas/Electricity I don't know what to do. I think the electricity is a prepayment meter and Gas is direct debit. Both with EDF Energy. Are we best just to stick with EDF for the time being? Or are able to still change supplier? I can't seem to get quotes for anything and was hoping to roughly budget what our bills will be. I know thats hard for anyone to do at the moment. I really don't want a prepayment meter so I would like to get that changed ASAP too.

Hi,you're stuck with whoever when you move, give them meter readings, do not agree to a fixed deal, if you can find a better deal, then switch.1

Regards prepayment meter, it's there you have to use it. Make sure that when you contact EDF they zero any debt owed by previous occupier, and give you a clean start. You can enquire about changing to a credit meter. It's unlikely that you'll find a better deal than staying on the standard variable tariff.

i'm in a similar position to OP, expecting to complete end of May. the person we're buying from is on a variable tariff with Ecotricity. i've got some quotes from all the well-known comparison websites but there are barely any deals. i imagine once we've moved in, come May, there will be more deals available?0

You'll probably find Ofgem's new capped rate will be cheaper. Most suppliers won't take you on as a new customer, at least on the SVT. At the moment EDF will, but only if you phone them. Their customer service is notoriously poor, but any port in a storm !1

To give you an idea of Ecotricity costs, tariff details can be found here: https://www.ecotricity.co.uk/our-tariff-ratesMsrajjc2 said:i'm in a similar position to OP, expecting to complete end of May. the person we're buying from is on a variable tariff with Ecotricity. i've got some quotes from all the well-known comparison websites but there are barely any deals. i imagine once we've moved in, come May, there will be more deals available?1 -
Not much point phoning to discuss before actually having moved in though I'd have thought?Gerry1 said:Msrajjc2 said:i'm in a similar position to OP, expecting to complete end of May. the person we're buying from is on a variable tariff with Ecotricity. i've got some quotes from all the well-known comparison websites but there are barely any deals. i imagine once we've moved in, come May, there will be more deals available?Ecotricity are not subject to the cap and will be very expensive. thanks for the info. i'd read Ecotricity aren't subject to the cap and hoped we would be able to switch supplier. i'm curious as to why you think "most suppliers" won't take us on as new customers? what's the reason behind that?Gerry1 said:Msrajjc2 said:i'm in a similar position to OP, expecting to complete end of May. the person we're buying from is on a variable tariff with Ecotricity. i've got some quotes from all the well-known comparison websites but there are barely any deals. i imagine once we've moved in, come May, there will be more deals available?Ecotricity are not subject to the cap and will be very expensive. we used the generic quote tool on Ecotricitiy's website and it said £250 a month, which is more than double what the owner is currently paying (£100).
my plan was to switch to a different provider on a fixed tariff as soon as we move in, but are you suggesting that won't be possible?0 -
Who knows where we'll be by the end of May... Today there are 'fixed' tariff offers from Scottish Power for new customers but the contracts can be ended any time SP choose with 42 days' notice. There may be others but if you go to price comparison sites or supplier websites you'll mind most aren't offering anything.0
