I'm looking to replace my Canon Pixma MG3250 which has been playing up for a while. It's always been clunky and a bit temperamental.
Due to limited space in my computer cupboard I need a front feed (not enough room for top feed) with width ideally no more than 430mm.
I've checked out Amazon, etc, and am having difficulty finding a front feed printer. Needs to be fairly simple as I'm a tech numpty although I can get someone to install it for me.
Can anyone help please.

  • What do you use your printer for? Photos? Documents?

What is you approx volume of printing?

    What is your budget?

Buying a printer based on external dimensions alone is a sure way to waste money if it is not suitable for your workload.

All in one printers usually have a scanner lid at the top that needs to be opened yet you don't have enough room for a top feed for paper? How much vertical space do you have?

Problem with front loader printers is they tend to be a bit picky about the paper they'll collect.  If its ever so slightly damp or if it isn't the right type or....

    Thanks for replying.

I don't print photos, just some documents. I do my son's accounts for his one man business so I print his estimates and invoices. Not big volume at all, maybe a couple of dozen sheets at most on a busy week.

I can lift the lid enough to slide a sheet of paper in to be scanned/copied if necessary but can't/don't need to have that fully open. Gap is 280mm high x 430mm wide, depth not a problem as there is 450mm.

Budget, well son is buying as it's his documents I'm printing and will go through business, but just a budget friendly small printer up to about £70ish maybe. He probably wont quibble if it's below £100.

Thanks for reply. We've been OK so far with this printer and decent quality paper, I usually get 90gsm.

only thing to bear in mind about HP is that the firmware is strict about trying to stop you using 3rd party cartridges

Maybe that's a more recent thing ... my HP Photosmart All-In-One printer/scanner warns me about non-genuine inks but it doesn't stop them from being used.

We got a Canon MG3650S from Argos to replace our old MG4250 for £40. We travelled 30 miles to the nearest Argos that had them, because we wanted to stick with front loading, and local stores only had top loaders.  I think the front-loading Canons might be end-of-range clearances now.

Uses PG540 and CL541 cartridges, same as the old one, seems to be built on the same chassis with slight cosmetic differences, but otherwise it's ticking over nicely
