Why not start by turning off your gas at the meter and live electric only for a month, bearing in mind the weather is getting better so heating may not be required.

There's no need to turn anything off 'at the meter' to just not use it. I'd not encourage anyone to start messing with their gas meter.

Most people have their main gas isolation valve adjacent to their meter.

With gas prices going through the roof can I stop my gas supply and go solely electric. I have electric shower and access to electric heaters. Basically can I run my house on electric alone and get my gas supply cut off and have one bill. Is it possible to do. I need electric but I'm not 100% sure of costs for stopping gas  supply etc. I'm with BRITISH GAS .
Is it viable and what's your thoughts. Are there any pitfalls?
The annual standing charge for gas is around £90.
There will be a charge for isolating your supply and removing your meter; others have reported this to be around £200.
In the winter, you'll either have to pay £200 again to have the supply reinstated or instead spend 4x as much on electric space heating instead of gas. Every 1000kWh of heat that you provide from electricity rather than gas will cost an extra £200-ish, and it's quite easy to use that much in one cold month.
Essentially. to save £90 on the gas standing charge you're proposing to spend £200 upfront then another £200+ in November, December, January, February and March.

There is still no reason to touch it that I can see.

Why? That's what the shut-off valve is for. It's people who box the meter in, so only the dials are showing that are in danger; they can't switch the gas off in an emergency.

Yes there are obviously safety reasons to touch it  :). What I meant was that there was no reason for someone in the OP's position to touch it.

Fitting a bath mixer tap with a shower handle would probably save more money.

When I had my heatpump fitted I had nothing that used gas so I had the meter removed by EDF for £80 to save me paying the service charge for something I don't use, I had to keep chasing them up for over 6 months for them to actually do it.

Of course should you want gas again and it has been over a year it will be the new connection £2000 job. People need to realise this too.
