Not worked for a company that doesn't offer only SSP. I've not been sick very often

It's ok so far. Haven't been ill so haven't tested the SSP issue.

Hybrid working but with people spread over multiple international sites, I don't see why it can't be full time WFH.

That's not to say I'm enamoured with the company, more wait and see if they show their true colours.

When I worked in the NHS I was paid when off sick (thankfully I wasn't very often), same thing when I worked in Higher Education. But when I worked for a private company (family owned, millionaires) there was no sick pay.

Fortunately I was very healthy but when I had an accident and damaged my shoulder, I had to have time off as I was a PA (lots of typing required) and couldn't do my job properly since using the shoulder exacerbated the problem and I was told at hospital to rest it as much as possible.

I had to claim SSP, which was pitiful. I couldn't afford a lot of time off so had to go back to work before my shoulder was fully healed and it took longer to get better. Boss didn't care, I was back in situ and he was happy to carry on adding to his millions. I did wonder about him when I first took on the job as his mantra was 'look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves'. He really stuck to it, too! I know it's sensible but not everyone was out to rob them.

I was glad to get back to a job in the NHS.

Commendable. But if you are injured in an accident, as I was when working for an employer who didn't provide sick pay, you really cannot help being 'sick' and SSP doesn't cover living expenses. I was forced back to work before my shoulder was fully healed because I couldn't afford to be off and it just slowed down my recovery.  Not many people want to be sick - it's sometimes unavoidable.
