Job offer but no company sick pay

  • It's an IT dept in a business and the holidays is 20 plus 8 bank holidays, ie. legal minimum.

The job offer and contract seems clear, no benefits listed except hols and pension.

Offer says extra hours may be worked but aren't paid yet contract says overtime is paid. Also says some roles are shift based. More issues I need to clarify.

I wouldn't want SSP only because of some past situations. 1wk for shingles and 2wks for broken bone cycling to work. Otherwise normally <5 sick days a year.

The non disparaging clause makes it very clear to employees from the outset that they shouldn't put anything negative about the employer onto any form of social media.  They can't control what you think, or what you actually say to people about them.  Slagging off an employer on social media can be classed as gross misconduct even if it isn't in the contract of employment.  I really don't understand how people can be so stupid as to put work related stuff on social media anyway.  I'm not suggesting the OP would, or that they fall into that category.

A company that discourages people being off sick through financial penalities is going to be one that has a lot of sick people in the office spreading all sorts of viruses.

There was one more thing at the end of the contract, a non-disparaging clause, ie. can't say anything bad about the company anywhere. Never seen that before!

With the advent of social media not unknown for people to do really stupid things and acts.

And not being particularly productive either ( except for producing more sick people) while they are there.

Or working from home not spreading anything anywhere beyond family/friends which were inevitable irrespective of if you work or not.

The OP mentioned offices, so I am assuming a degree of in-office work.

Even before covid £1bn companies (as the OP describes their potential new employer) had facilities for most staff to work from home. It may not have been encouraged, indeed my last pre-covid boss hated WFH, but being full of plague was one of the reasons accepted for not venturing in.

Now with many office workers being badged as "hybrid workers" and so no longer expected to be in 5 days a week its easier still to say you've a heavy cold so won't be doing your 2-3 office days this week
