You can apply to have your Electric supply "de-energised" which is not the same as having it disconnected altogether.

BUT there is even a charge just to have a computer tick box pressed to de-energise and then to re-energise again.

Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
  • Surely this is a wind up.
  • We might not hear anything back as he has now disconnected his electric supply.

Can you still get gas powered fridges?
Yes, I've got one we use when we go camping. And you can get large domestic-sized ones.
They're not very energy-efficient, though; an electric one works out cheaper to run despite electricity costing 5x as much as gas does.
You can get gas lighting, too, which is even less efficient compared to electric light. It gives a lovely ambience and keeps you warm to boot!

I used to know someone who always charged both there phone and laptop at a coffee shop as "Why not it's free". I'm sure it cost them more in coffee than the equivalent electric bill as they visited the place daily...

I wondered if there was a way to do it without informing the landlord. I haven;t used one unit since October and yet I'm facing a standing charge of nearly £200 per year under the new rates. I can no longer find a "no standing charge" tariff.

Something does not seem eight, that is so high. Which provider are you with and what is the rate? Are you PAYG?

Not sure there is a way. How will you survive without electricity?

The £200 figure is about right for the electricity standing charge in the south west region at the April price cap.

Standing charges will be over 50p/day in many areas.
