Credit Balances

Options
I have been trying to find out if I will ever get my money back...

I was with Bristol Energy. They had a credit balance of circa £600. I moved from Bristol Energy to Bulb in September. Transfer was smooth. I was told the credit balance from Bristol Energy would be credited to my account once the final bill was raised.

The final bill was raised in early November. I called Bristol Energy numerous times to get the credit back into my account. I was told each time it is being processed etc.

Come December 2021, they said it is just pending. Wait till new year. I patiently waited. I then tried to call in January as no credit had arrived, and to my surprise Bristol Energy has collapsed.

I have tried to call Ofgen in relation to this, no adequate response. Bristol Energy lines are closed.

How do I proceed? Is my money protected? When will I get it back? It is not a small balance!!

Please help / advise

You will eventually get your refund from British Gas as they are the Supplier of Last Resort.
It is likely to take a few months but it will happen eventually.

  • I'm still waiting for £220 from Zog via EDF, having had the supply transferred 3 months ago. I don't see why I should increase my direct debit in line with the new cap while they have my money.

It is good that you have the final bill from Bristol Energy showing exactly how much they owed you. Perversely, your refund will have to come from British Gas, the Supplier of Last Resort appointed by OFGEM to sort out the Bristol Energy accounts, even though your energy is supplied by Bulb. The money does not come from Bristol Energy, but from a central pot paid for by all of us out of standing charges. British Gas will be focussing on dealing with the former BE customers for whom they have actually become the new energy supplier. You may have to be quite patient for them to get round to situations like yours.

EDF do not have your money, Zog do but as they collapsed it disappeared. Your credit has not been transferred from Zog to EDF, EDF will credit you then claim it back from OFGEM which is why the electric standing charge is increasing by at least 18p per day from April.

Fake news in the first sentence.  Credit balances with failed companies ARE protected. The increased standing charge is as a result of the SOLR companies having increased costs in processing lots of new customers and accepting them onto loss making variable tariffs at a time of extraordinarily high energy rates.

I didn’t say they wouldn’t get it, of course I know it’s protected & they’ll get it. The poster implied that EDF have their credit balance which they don’t. Also part of the processing of new customers includes the energy company having to apply the final credits to accounts which they claim back from OFGEM as part of the costs
  • I am still owed my credit from Bristol Energy- I was moved to British Gas and am having no joy in getting the credit back. Is anyone else still waiting? It has been 8 months and I had my final bill in May 2022. Is there anything I can do as I’m struggling with the higher monthly DD and it’s about to get even worse.

British Gas don't give it back.  When they became my SoLR, when I eventually got a proper bill from them the credit balance showed on that, it took 9 months.  That may be why you are struggling as they may well not have the system in place to refund to none customers.

Are you absolutely sure you haven't had the credit back? I owed money to my previous supplier when I was moved to BG in late November - the debt was finally shown on my BG statements as a "miscellaneous document" debit nearly 5 months later in April.
  • I am still waiting for mine back.  I was with Bristol Energy who went bust in January.  I raised a complaint with British Gas who said I would have it by the end of August and here I am in mid-September with nothing and now there is a problem with the BG website and I can't log in. I need to the money to pay my new, increased bills!

I really feel this is something that Martin Lewis should be taking up.
