It was talked sbout on Moneybox on Radio 4. They spoke to the energy companies who said it was fine.

Hope someone from MSE can confirm the idea of topping up your old prepayment meter before 1st April to offset against the new rates for a while is a valid one.
This is a "MSE News" thread, posted by a member of MSE staff and relates to a MSE news item on the MSE website. I don't know what more confirmation from MSE you could ask for?

Yeah, i realise that now, i didnt even spot the link in the first post, kinda just missed it and read the other posts.

So it would seem we have a range of outcomes depending on a range of scenarios.

I suspect there is something in the small print that say we have to submit accurate readings anyway as part of the contract.

Yep - look at it like this.
    - If you go into a supermarket, stick a tin of Heinz beans in your pocket, and walk out without paying, that's stealing. You may be prosecuted.
    - If you go into a supermarket, stick a tin of Heinz beans in your pocket, and walk out leaving just the money for a tin of value beans on the till as you pass, that's still stealing. You may be prosecuted.
If you go into a supermarket, stick a tin of value beans in your pocket, and walk out leaving the money for a tin of Heinz beans on the till as you pass, that's stupidity. You lose out financially.
    - If you go into a supermarket, stick a tin of Heinz beans in your pocket, and walk out to the checkout and pay for your tin of Heinz beans, that's being honest. You're a decent human.

A range of outcomes depending on the scenario, simplified.  :)

  • I read a really helpful post that for those on prepayment meters (that are not smart) funds could be held on the key as the meter can only hold £249. Does anyone know if the credit on the keys expires at some point? I am with British Gas.

I'm with So Energy for gas and BG for elec.
So Energy don't support pre-pay meters.

Is there any chance I could switch from a dumb credit meter, to a dumb prepayment meter? And have it done before the price increase? Or do the companies only offer smart meters now?

Smart only these days, and a bit late to get it done before April 1st anyway...
