NHS staff members are overwhelmingly (I have read 77%) female. Are businesses opening themselves to discrimination claims by offering discounts to NHS staff?

No, obviously not. Being employed by the NHS (or not) is not a protected status.8

But no, offering a discount to an employer doesn't automatically make it discriminatory even if that employer is skewed on gender, race etc. You would need to prove they selected that employer BECAUSE they had few blacks working for them etc rather than being neutral on the matter and instead offering it because they provide an essential service despite the low pay.0 -

If an imbalance in staff gender was a bar to discounts, no company would risk doing it. One staff member leaves and the ratio is no longer 50:50.

Some business also offer discounts to our armed forces, which are 88% male give or take. Are they opening themselves to discrimination claims too?11

One of our local hairdressers offers reductions for people in the armed forces, NHS staff and pensioners. Only during the week though. Stretching a point, could that be seen as discrimination?0

Some of our local hairdressers won't serve men at all, only women.
Blatant discrimination3 -
Our local fish and chip shop have a ‘pensioners’ special at fixed times , maybe I should feel discriminated against as unlike many of my friends I have no occupational pension and cannot therefore term myself a pensioner until I’m 67. One of my acquaintances got a pension at a very young age, early fifties from memory, and would therefore be entitled to the special offer even though she is younger than me.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards.
