Graphics card + display settings.

I've just had a graphics card replaced (not new), one to keep me going till I can get a new pc. It is a "ATI Radean HD 4300/4500 Series". I have a 28" monitor and previously this was edge to edge and clear to read. Now its all stretched and squished, I'm in display settings and the largest choice its offering me is 1280 x 1024, I'm sure that before I had a 1920 option and I suspect this is what I need but its missing. I've tried to update the driver and it says this is fine, anything else I can do or am i out of luck and defo need a new machine pronto?

    How are you connected? HDMI?

What is the resolution of the display? 1920 x 1080?

Have you installed the ATI Radeon (AMD) graphics driver application? https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/faq/gpu-driver-autodetect gives an option to auto-detect. Or you could try to find the specific AMD driver here https://www.amd.com/en/support

I suspect you're using the standard Windows driver and it doesn't know what to do with that card/monitor.

  • Are you using the VGA output or DVI?

You won't get 1920x1080 on the VGA output for that card, max is 1680x1050 or similar equivalent that matches the screen.

If it doesn't work after downloading and installing the drivers suggested in the above comments, then tell us what cable you are using?

That card is 14 years old and is not supported in W10, if you were running W8 before and migrated it might have brought the drivers over and worked, but not on a clean install.

Worth doing when kit reaches a certain age, 10+ years is a good life for most IT kit.

This is what the repair chap said too, I've had my moneys worth so no grumbles from me. New machine arrived this morning and I've got it all set up relatively painlessly so quite seamless currently. Already upgraded it to W11.

W11 seems pretty decent, I have it on my work laptop, I have not had any problems with it, although it is frustrating that some things are now hidden in a way that they were not before, but I doubt that impacts most people.

If you're thinking about the right-click context menu - there's a registry fix for that. :)
