How did you come up with the coke solution, was it the real thing or just cola

I googled before I asked here and got nine million different answers, none of them particularly reliable. One I read was coke which I happened to have a little bottle of and also I knew wouldn't damage anything so there was no harm trying. And it was proper brand name coca cola, la di da! ;)
  • My hubby often comes home with clothes reeking of patrol/diesel/hydraulic oil etc. I just give them a good wash and dry, preferably outside, and they usually smell fine. If it still smells a bit, I repeat the procedure. They nearly always do still smell of the fluid when wet, but dry it's fine.

My OH and DS were out on their quad yesterday and had a slight accident, they were both fine thankfully with their safety equiptment but the petrol leaked over their clothes and cannot get the smell out of them. the safety gear is expensive so not like i can just though it out? any suggestions? have washed around 3 times and they dont smell any different.

Put them on a clothes line outside and let the fresh air blow through them.

Might take a day or two but it will go in the end.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

I'd try giving it a hot wash with a cupful of soda crystals in it, and then follow it with a hot wash with a cupful of white vinegar in with it. My stepdad often comes home from work reeking of petrol and my mum does this when it's really bad, and it seems to help.

Edited for clarity - I mean washing the machine out, not the clothes!
  • This won't help the machine, but try and dry the affected washing outdoors. Even if there's no sun around, it's amazing what a difference the fresh air makes.
