I would suggest trying Thunderbird, it’s currently still being maintained and is able to cope with the fact that some mail providers keep changing their views

Back again - tried numerous times to get Outlook to work with gmail using specific app passwords but no luck.
AOL on the other hand works perfectly.
I have now installed Thunderbird for the gmail account and so far so good.

The good news is I found thunderbird very good at spam filtering and it is great for setting your own filters. Also you can examine the email source by highlighting the email and ctrl+u (equivalent to view source) , and you get the full headers which are useful for seeing who it came from which also helps setting filters.
