Outlook 2007 Problems?

Hi All
I've been using Outlook 2007 with an AOL and a gmail account for over 10 years now without problems.
Just before Christmas I started getting a message that the AOL account couldn't be synchronized (0x800CCC0E) and couldn't connect to the server.
This wasn't a big deal as I didn't use the account much, so I removed it and now go through the AOL page when needed.

However, the same thing has now started with the gmail account, and I would really like to get it resolved if possible?
Nothing has been changed on the account, and I've trawled the net trying various "fixes" but still the problem persists.
I have checked port settings, password, changed the imap and smpt addresses from gmail to googlemail etc etc but no joy.
I assume this is an Outlook problem rather than gmail as the AOL account had the same problem?

Can anyone offer anything else I might try please?
Any help much appreciated.

Thank You

  • Thanks for the reply.
I had read about the app passwords, but can't understand why AOL would have had the same issue if it
was a requirement for an additional Google password.
Any thoughts on Thunderbird as an outlook replacement?
    Cheers

Had you activated 2-step authentication on your AOL account? That might explain why Outlook 2007 no longer worked with it unless you set up an app password.

I don't think Thunderbird would solve the problems you're having.

The need for an app password will apply regardless of your choice of email client.  It will be a side effect of two factor authentication.
  • Good Morning

I haven't activated 2 step verification on either account - Outlook just started throwing up the error message.
When I checked Google security the sign in is showing the password box, with no reference to 2 step verification.
I'm now getting the continual enter password message when I open Outlook.
    Very fustrating!!!

Ultimately this is an Outlook 2007 issue, as it is old, and doesn't support the latest secure email connection methods.

As suggested above, it should work if configured with app specific passwords

This is not necessarily the case, as many modern email apps can connect without the need for app specific passwords. See links above. App specific password is the fall back solution if all else fails.

Thunderbird, Bluemail, Spark etc can all connect to GMail and Hotmail/Outlook for accounts with 2FA enabled, without the need for app specific passwords.
And from the AOL link, it looks like a number of apps can also connect (I don't have an AOL account to test)
  • Thanks for all the help so far - much appreciated.
I have got Outlook working with gmail (haven't tried AOL yet) on one laptop using the app password.
However the second laptop refuses to connect despite using exactly the same settings.
Does each machine need it's own password by any chance? And do I need another one for AOL?

    Thanks again for the help.

You should use a different app specific password for each different application instance.

AOL will need it own app specific passwords too.

    Good Morning and thanks k_man

Feels like one step forward and two back this morning!!
I was able to get AOL working on both devices but gmail is a different story.

Yesterday it worked fine on the first laptop but not the second - can't logon to server.
This morning it has stopped working again. I have removed the app passwords and generated new ones but still
    doesn't want to logon.

Any ideas on my next move please?

Is Less Secure app access enabled or disabled, that is likely to be required for Outlook 2007?

    https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/6010255

Note: enabling this is a security risk, but so is using Outlook 2007.
For completeness I would recommend instead using a secure access method (web access or more up to date email client) and enabling 2FA on any accounts you use, but I am aware that is off topic for the problem at hand.
