Buying a property with invasive plant in garden - wwyd

So, we put an offer in on a property last winter. Been to see it 4x since and got a survey. Turns out there’s a load of bamboo (much more than first met the eye) so commissioned a proper bamboo survey.
This revealed over 130sq m of bamboo of the running/spreading variety with significant spread into one neighbours garden and minor but definite spread to another neighbours garden. It’s over 20m from any property thankfully.
quote well into a 5 figure sum for killing it with herbicide (all gardens to prevent it respreading) and then removing it (our garden to be).
Wwyd? Try to renegotiate? Run?
Words of wisdom appreciated :)

Depends on how much you want the property and how much you;re prepared to pay to rectify it really.....

Have you spoken to the neighbours?  They might be delighted, but you can't just poison plants on their land without agreement and permission - even nasty ones that spread from your land!
The sum quoted does seem steep - I would look for a second opinion.

  • I’ve had two opinions and both said same thing :/
well the other person who came simply said it was too big a job for him but did say it’d be in the 10s of thousands bracket

  • Would this be good grounds for renegotiation do you think?

A lady I know in passing has had bamboo spreading from a neighbouring unoccupied property. She has spent £10K putting a barrier in her garden to keep it from reaching her house.

Now that it has spread to the neighbors land, you may never be able to kill it all. I would worry that it could make the property unmortgage able  in future.

At the very least it would need a big price reduction compared to a property without this issue.
  • That's a huge area, so I would avoid it. Out of interest, what species is it?

I've never known an ornamental one typically sold in garden centres to be as prolific as the one shown in the daily mail article.
