100% Rise from EDF

I normally pay £80 for the gas and electric use.
They want to up it to £160 per month?
I thought increases were capped at around 52%?
Checking other tariffs the cheapest is £192 +
Before I challenge EDF your thoughts and expertise please.

You're confusing your bill with your DD amount.  A fixed DD is simply a top up of a kitty which may or may not be sufficient to pay the bill.
Only the kWh rates and the standing charges are (temporarily) fixed.  It's never All You Can Eat, if you use more than expected the kitty won't have enough in it to pay the bill, hence the DD will rise, once to reflect higher usage and again to claw back the arrears.
The 52% refers to the increase on a bill of average usage. YMMV.
There's the option of paying the whole bill (Variable Direct Debit) but remember that you'd have big bills in the winter and smaller ones in the summer.

Are you coming off a fixed tariff & either going onto SVR or are they suggesting a new, fixed tariff?
Is your account in credit or debit?
The 1st April capped tariff rates increase is compared to the previous capped tariff rate (& the increases for electricity & gas SVRs are different. the suggested 52-54% overall increase relates to an "average" user with an "average" electricity/gas use ratio  - many people's experience will be different). Please note that the cap is on the rates & not the amount - use more & you will pay more.

If you want more specific help please provide:
the tariff name/rates that you are on & what they are proposing
actual annual usage figures for electricity & gas.

If it’s a fixed tariff that will over run the 1st April, they won’t increase the DD until your next review (Apparently).
I was offered the chance to pay some extra dough into my account to cover the rises….very nice of them 😉
  • If you are coming off a fixed tariff the rise can be absolutely shocking.

I am on a very cheap fix with EDF until 30 June this year and based on actual annual usage my average monthly bill will go from £56 to £126 when going onto the SV tariff.

The current fixes they are offering are around £170/month.

I am lucky enough to be able to pay using Monthly DD (Whole Amount) so I only pay EDF after I have used my energy and they never get a penny in advance.

I left EDF years ago because of their greedy monthy DDs. They expect to overcharge then trickle your money back to you.

@brightondave, as you are less than a month in credit, it looks as if EDF's estimates of usage are pretty accurate, which is not actually great news.

Your gas tariff prices are more than doubling, electricity night rate almost tripling and day rate going up by 55% plus big increases on the electricity standing charge.

Their new request of £160 looks pretty accurate.
  • So this is going to be the same for everybody?

Yes and, sadly, it could get a lot worse as further failed supplier costs are added to our bills. The great unknown is what the war in Ukraine will do to gas supplies. Reduced supplies always equate to higher prices.
  • So going on a price comparison site in April are we saying that I'm not really going to find a lower monthly direct debit from any supplier?
