First time buyer - where are the bargains?

First time buyer here and desperately looking for some decent deals for white goods. Anyone know of the best places to get reliable appliances such as fridges and washing machines?
Open to buying second hand or ex display providing they are in decent condition

Facebook Marketplace is usually good - plenty on there, just check descriptions and photos carefully.

I was stalking ElekDirect when we wanted a freezer (it's AO's outlet) but didn't actually purchase from there in the end.

I would put a post on my local FB group asking if anybody can recommend a local discount appliance store - most towns have one, so you'll get some reviews, but you may get offered appliances from somebody looking to get rid if you're lucky.
  • Thank you!  I was looking on ElekDirect too. Even on there some of the prices are a bit of a stretch for me at the moment.

I was originally going to go for John Pye auctions but the reviews are so bad for electrical items as majority seem to be faulty.

You could try Freecycle or Freegle. I've seen fridges and freezers quite often, and recently there was a washing machine on offer. You might get something good, or just something to tide you over till you see a bargain.

I bought a fridge freezer for £46 on ebay.  Lasted me for three years til I could afford to replace it with a better one.  Insist on seeing items working.

    Try charity shops.
Some sell electrical stuff (have seen them in Shelter). They will have been safety checked.
Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)

I put ours on on Facebook marketplace. Perfectly good stuff but goes to local people.
I always do 'must collect' so that might be an issue for you, but defo check out Marketplace
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....
  • FB marketplace seems to be the way to go these days. We bought a fridge for our garage a few years back from there, you can search for local listings and every man and his dog has a FB account so there are ample listings for most things.

    Avoid gumtree, full of scammers.

  • Look on hotukdeals - very good site for finding deals on anything really.

  • I gave away a washing machine on Freecycle (it hadn't been plumbed in for a couple of years as we were renting and had been stored in a shed. So it was, it may not work anymore, buy it did last time it was plumbed in. We were moving to a purchased house with built in appliances)

I have also had success buying freezers on eBay, and other furniture on FB marketplace. As long as you can collect, though the seller of our amazing table had to deliver it as it wouldn't fit in a normal car.
