ANKA Smoke/Heat Alarm Ebay Recall

Hi All,

I purchased some ANKA smoke alarms and a heat alarm from eBay recently.
A couple of days ago I received a recall message from eBay telling me -

'We take product safety very seriously. We’re reaching out to you because an item you purchased may have been recalled or pose a safety hazard. We recommend that you stop using this product. If you have questions about the item(s), please reach out to the seller or the manufacturer. Item details are listed below.

This item was referred to us by UK/US/AU/DE authorities due to product safety concerns. The item(s) in question has been found to be harmful to its users.'

The message is through my eBay messages and is genuine.
However, the alarms still seem to be on sale on Amazon and elsewhere online.

Does anyone have an idea of what is going on?

  • I purchased them via eBay as well and also received the email.  The seller said that he contacted the manufacturer and checked online and found out that there was no evidence that they had been recalled and couldn’t understand why eBay had sent the email and that eBay were investigating. Mine are still in their box meantime.  Have you contacted your seller?
  • Yes, I got that message too.
I'm not sure if there's a way to contact ebay directly without going down 100 rabbit holes, but looks as though the product has removed from ebay and I've messaged the seller today to ask why.
There's something odd about this - I don't think we are being told the full story.
Not sure whether to install the alarms....

  • I got the same email from eBay. When I contacted the seller they said that a competitor had made a bogus complaint to eBay and that the products are fine. I don't know if this is true but i can't find any evidence of an actual recall. No such recall is listed on the government site.

The manufacturers site screams Chinese junk to me.

Amazon reviews are atrocious, and if they actually reliably do the job they're supposed to, I'll be surprised.

Proper BSAU approved alarms are more expensive for a reason.

Some things are fine to buy cheap but why would you cut corners with cheap chinese smoke alarms.

Yes - I got the same reply and also couldn't find any sign of a recall.
The only manufacturer I can see with recall issues are Kidde.
  • Talking to ebay tonight and they say the seller's account is under review.
These emails get sent out (I think) as a consequence of them being under review.
They couldn't say why the seller was under review though.

If you manage to find any smoke alarms not made in China, let me know? Good luck :0)
