I have always used a dual or tri-SIM Android, almost constantly roaming and never have problems, but the eSIM might be a solution for the OP if their iPhone supports it. Incoming SMS is always free globally with any provider.

Some newer Android phones actually have esim capability too - mostly Samsung and Google.
Incoming sms aren't always free - if the home network charges for incoming texts then the roaming one will too.

Interesting, but personally I couldn't justify the cost of such phones.
Do you know of any network that charges for incoming texts..?
