New physical landline

Options
I have moved into a new house. I'm with Zen internet who are excellent. My internet is currently ADSL over the phone line. I've been getting some disconnects.

My weird issue is this: the previous owners of the house built the rear extension OVER the physical phone line! :o The line comes from the pole, connects to next door, then is actually buried beneath my kitchen/spare bedroom before coming out of the wall and heading down to the master socket at the back.

If there is a problem with the physical line, BT OpenReach won't be able to access it. I'm happy to have a new line put in from the pole to fit to my extension. Is that something that OpenReach do via my ISP?

Also, will I get in trouble for having their phone line buried under my house? It wasn't me wot did it gov...

Plenty of phone lines are already buried underground or have ended up under property. If this section under your house develops an issue Openreach will fix it as appropriate, which will usually be a case of run a new line from the pole to the master socket and tack it to the wall.

Anyway if your house is served by telephone/telegraph pole chances are 95% of the line is already underground before it gets to you.

As to putting a new line in - why?  Just use the existing one and if it stops working on Openreach's side that's their problem.  You're not going to "get in trouble" for that, its no different an argument to saying you'll get in trouble because your house happens to have been built with asbestos in the concrete mixing of the house's construction/roof files, a practice that has been banned since 2000.
  • Thanks for the reply. I'm just paranoid because in  my experience, big companies tend to be somewhat unforgiving.
