Sky TV. Is it worth cancelling and then start as a new customer

We've been with Sky tv ever since it first arrived I think.
We have moved house 4 times since.
We've got discounts but the bill per month is close to 100 and expected to increase by about 9 pounds.

What if I was to give them cancellation notice and my wife who has her own bank account etc bought
Sky TV services as a new customer. Do you think we will get a better del

I'm too old to work it out so need a bit of help in plain English
I've looked at Sky's website offers ad it is mind blowing

We have as follows

Sky HD +
Multiroom EG 2nd box in bedroom
We have broadband
We have phone services where we get up to an hour free to most landlines and mobiles.
Currently, we have Indian movies as our son has married an Indian lass.
We have the pack with Discovery and the like.

Many thanks.

have to admit OH is all for cancelling after 20 odd years, they really are heading downhill, so much sport is lost and a lot has been diluted by other services - not sure where sky will fit in unless it drops it's prices or ups the game.
Has any one noticed the peacock channel total rubbish and the movies is now full of Sky's own movies....
  • I gave up sky 5 years ago, mainly due to cost and how little I watched new content. I spent a good number of years watching repeats on channel's like discovery, Eden, sky one and Atlantic. They offered me different retention deals after every contract term was up, but it got too much and when I left I had my partner try and sign up as a new customer, they were offering just standard deals nothing for me a long term customer. On the plus side, over last 5 years I've saved at least £2,200 and with less channels I find it easier to watch something that's on.
If you like movies have a walk round charity shops and grab a dvd or more for 50p-£1... Watch and donate back, if like it keep it.

On the other hand I have a friend who is a big tv watcher and has 2 teenage children who watch alot of sky. He pays around the same amount as you and consider's it good value for the amount they watch.

So the answer to your question.... I doubt it.

Just read all of the comments - thank you all for your postings as all helpful.
You guys have made me think re alternatives

Btw, we have now tv as well pay 8 a month movies all repeats or seen them all - good ones that is.
  • Hi. I've cancelled everything with sky today.
I doubt even if they offered me a good deal I'd go back.
I asked to cancel my TV package only and keep my broadband at the same price. They said yesterday that would be ok. So today I phoned up to sort it out but they said no and If I cancel within my contract I have to cancel everything or ride out my contract and even then they couldn't assure me after the contract ended they wouldn't put the price up again.
After nearly 14 years without a break, the last 2 prices increases within an 18 month contract just done it for me.
No idea where I'm going from here but the whole contracts, repeats and price increases are out dated.
I'm thinking of streaming, rolling contracts and no TV licence maybe the way forward.

Are phone line rentals still mandatory these days with all providers, IE what about Virgin who have cabels? Thanks

Line rental isn’t telephony,  your ‘broadband’ needs a ‘line’ to work , and that is rented , how they represent the line rental and broadband amount is irrelevant, if a company offered free broadband but line rental was £30 ( and to get BB you have to take LR ) and another company offered the identical service but the bill was presented as £15 line rental and £15 broadband , would you go with the second company for no other reason than simply LR is £15 whereas the first company is £30 ?, company’s have to show the total amount , only the naive would think they could get BB for £15 if it weren’t for the ‘rip off’ line  rental.

Telephony can be removed with quite a few company’s, so if you don’t make or receive calls on your landline you can save around £2-£5 / month , VM have always had stand alone broadband and it’s always been about the same price as broadband and phone service

FWIW, I had Sky TV a few years ago, only had the basic Sky TV ( no movies ,sport , HD or box sets ) and it was going up to £36/month, I cancelled and haven’t missed it at all .

I'm not sure if Sky would let you cancel and re-join (albeit in wife's name).
I've generally thought that Sky is the best TV offering, but I also know that I should get out more.
I took up Sky's £5 Netflix offer, but I've struggled a bit to find things to watch there (there seems a lot of dubbed foreign content there, which I'm not so struck on).
I don't get Sky Movies nor Sports; I've had Movies but couldn't find anything I wanted to watch, had Sports some time ago but gave up when it kept showing Snooker, and I had F1 a couple of years ago on a discount but it's too expensive list-price and I don't think I'll invest time watching it anymore if the officials are just going to throw the races.
Maybe one day I'll do away with Sky...

The person I spoke to at sky said I could start again as a new customer.
I didnt wanted to cancel everything, just the TV package but they said no.
So I was told after the 31 days are up I could check online (even before the 31 days if I wanted to) then if there was a suitable BB and phone line deal to ring them.
Not sure I will as I'm looking around for other deals elsewhere
