I have been an internet user since the top speed was 90 baud. And have had to changed providers many times. I would like to recommend the Company I have used for the past 6 years. The Help line Is one of the Few things that is Not Free it cost 10p a min and its only open 8am till 8pm however, they never takes more than min or two to connect. And if call takes more than a few min they will call you back. The bandwidth charges are the best I have found anywhere. Lots of free stuff like unlimited pop3 email addresses, Free Web hosting with unlimited online web space. No Long Term Contract. And when the Wholesaler (Read Aunt BT) dropped the ball and disconnected me for two weeks these guys set me up with a free 56k dial-up Account till the Wholesaler could get there act together. If they have a fault it’s called hiding your light under a bushel. So If you want to Do a good deed and in the process help a small British company. You could do far worse then try www.Freeola.com

i was a bit concerned seeing that the op's first post read like an advert, but freeola are an entanet reseller, there's lots out there, and they are all pretty good (i use a different one myself). i'd agree with FknDummBstrd that anyone wanting internet the way it should be should consider one of the resellers (freeola/adsl24/vivaciti/ukfsn and many others).
most are just 1 or 2 man bands, giving a level of support which i find hard to believe, and they know their stuff, unlike the 'script monkeys' employed by the major ISPs.
the thing he didnt mention was that they all offer 30 day contracts, so if you don't like it for any reason its dead easy to leave whenever you like (most large ISPs offer 12, 18 or even 24 month contracts, giving you a long time to regret a hasty decision)
