One reason to watch the person on the till. If you hear one too many beep or see them having a issue scanning a item, then it's time to check receipt.
If you're at the checkout and you hear the beep.Think of the fun you could be having on Supermarket Sweep.
    Come on you Irons

I went into The Range yesterday and bought 4 items. Just today I noticed I have been charged for 5 items. I was charged twice for one item. It was £6.99. I phoned them and they told me to go back and they will check the CCTV to make sure I'm telling the truth. The thing is, I don't drive, I walked to the shop which took me around 40 minutes then got a taxi home. The taxi cost £6. If I have the receipt with all the details on it and they can check their CCTV then why do I have to be inconvenienced and visit the shop again and either walk there and back which will not cost anything. (I'm 65). Or get another taxi which will use up the money they will refund me! I paid by card so I can't see why they can't refund the money that way as this was not my fault.

If it's so difficult to travel there and back then why didn't you alteast look at the receipt before you left to make sure it was correct which wouldn't have taken long at all if you only bought 4 items.
Because most of us just assume that other people are doing their job properly and can be trusted not to muck it up.

So you have never looked at any bill from any trader, restaurant or any receipt ever because you assume they have done their job properly so just pay it without question?

When a shop has so many items there is always a chance that a price displayed on a shelf is different than what it is acutally scanned at; in the last year alone i can remember atleast 2 occasions of this happening.
There is always a chance of human error so i don't see why you wouldn't do this consiering adding up as you go along doesn't actually add any time and checking a receipt in your hand only takes a few seconds.
When we first started shopping at Lidl some years ago, on three or four occasions the bill seemed excessive and on immediately checking found we had been charged for a not inexpensive item we did not purchase. Massive apologies from staff, but after the second occasion we started getting suspicious of till staff overcharging with or without management collusion. Don't know what happened but the "practice" soon stopped.

So definitely pays to check bills before leaving the store
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

I know many people of 65 and over who enjoy walking.
So? I know many people who like dancing. That's got as much relevance to the OP as your comment.
But it was the OP who brought up their age as a reason for not wanting to walk back to the store?

I'm no more than a year younger than the OP and I'm just about to get ready to go out for a 10k run.  Admittedly it's not walking, but I can't see why the OP thought their age was relevant to having to walk back to the store.  (It might be that they have a very good reason for not wanting to walk back to the store, but I can't see how being 65 - on its own - can be that reason).
