If they have CCTV that can show that level of detail it will be linked to a master clock as it will be the overhead security system for the tills.

I love these factual posts basen on assumptions. I have a CCTV system at work.. it shows the tills in great detail... but it's not sycronised to the clocks on the till system at all.
I was speaking from experience  :)  It's fairly common for the CCTV console clock not to have been adjusted for years or, even, not to have been set in the first place!

I went into The Range yesterday and bought 4 items. Just today I noticed I have been charged for 5 items. I was charged twice for one item. It was £6.99. I phoned them and they told me to go back and they will check the CCTV to make sure I'm telling the truth. The thing is, I don't drive, I walked to the shop which took me around 40 minutes then got a taxi home. The taxi cost £6. If I have the receipt with all the details on it and they can check their CCTV then why do I have to be inconvenienced and visit the shop again and either walk there and back which will not cost anything. (I'm 65). Or get another taxi which will use up the money they will refund me! I paid by card so I can't see why they can't refund the money that way as this was not my fault.

If it's so difficult to travel there and back then why didn't you alteast look at the receipt before you left to make sure it was correct which wouldn't have taken long at all if you only bought 4 items.
Because most of us just assume that other people are doing their job properly and can be trusted not to muck it up.

So you have never looked at any bill from any trader, restaurant or any receipt ever because you assume they have done their job properly so just pay it without question?

When a shop has so many items there is always a chance that a price displayed on a shelf is different than what it is acutally scanned at; in the last year alone i can remember atleast 2 occasions of this happening.
There is always a chance of human error so i don't see why you wouldn't do this consiering adding up as you go along doesn't actually add any time and checking a receipt in your hand only takes a few seconds.

I check bills and receipts for high value items.  I don't check receipts for a "standard" shop, unless something about the amount raises suspicions.

As in whilst standing at your till or have you also been watching customers as they walk away? I certainly don't check every receipt but if the value triggers a "how did she manage to spend that much" feeling then I'll generally scan it whilst walking away rather than at the till... 99% of the case its because I've not appreciated how expensive certain things were.

Well in the OP's case they bought 4 items so if they had added it up as they went along and rounded up to the nearest £ for each item to make it easy, then an extra £6.99 would have been very obviously wrong when they were asked to pay.

One reason to watch the person on the till. If you hear one too many beep or see them having a issue scanning a item, then it's time to check receipt.

I must admit that I often check the receipt as I walk away, it's so much easier to query while in store than to drive home and face a 15 mile round trip back.
As for the OPs problem, they only have your word that they scanned something twice & nobody noticed. I did it once on self scan, I scanned too many cat food packs, but it was my fault and it was on £4.
Either go back and point yourself out on the CCTV or leave it, they don't owe you anything
