What were the meter readings on those dates?

  • Gas was 09025 and electric was 14085. , this is why I’m confused that the British Gas bill starts at readings of 06861 gas and 14311 electric ?

The important point is you now have evidence you can give to BG which clearly shows their opening reading is inaccurate.

  • Oh my goodness after everyone’s help and Clarification  I contacted British Gas on live chat , gave them all the readings I had and they reissued mums bill at £413 !!! down from £1600 , thank you so much
  • Maybe your mum could try wrapping herself in a heated snuggly blanket if she stays seated much of the time. and getting a timed electric under blanket to warm her bed instead of paying to heat the room, rather than heating the house 24/7 I've just had a hive thermostat fitted.it allows me to 'boost' ie turn on the heating for 30 minutes or more in hourly increments. I tend to put it on for 1-2hours. It then goes off automatically. Then when I sense its cold gain I boost it again for an hour. (Usually i check the ambient temp 2'3times a day as i pass the hall  thermostat on the way to the bathroom. And teactivste it as needed. Then put it on constant at 4/5 pm and manually turn it off about an hour before bed. I no longer routinely put the heating on regular timed setting I heat according to daily conditions. They say just reducing thermostat by one degree will be imperceptible but cost effective. As energy costs have more than doubled its vital we conserve the heat we pay for. Octopus energy website have lots of money saving tips like foil behind radiators and drought proofing slow cookers  Many Local councils have winter warmer departments that can come out and assess the situation provide simple room thermometers and blankets and foil.

I find it cheaper to use a hot water bottle and a thermal dressing gown rather than put the heating on most days. My gas standing charges are normally more than what my gas usage is.
Someone please tell me what money is

My charges with Octopus have gone up 260%. Just shocking! Annual rise from £1732 to £4159 so a rise of £2426. My husband is on blood thinning medication so feels the cold always but we have to limit the amount of heat we use. So awful how high the prices have gone with all the energy companies! :(

That sounds like you have moved onto an expensive fixed rate instead of the cheaper variable rate tariff?
Can you tell us which tariff you are on and when you moved onto it?

My fixed year ended on 26 March 2022 and they said they had moved me onto a Flexible tariff at the annual amount of £1732 then it said my new tariff options were 10 months fixed at £346 and £4159 annually or Loyal 10 months fixed at £334, although taking the loyalty fixed for 10 months would reduce it to £4014. It says that, if fixed, the unit rates and standing charge are for 10 months. Martin has said not to fix just now though in case things do change, although that was his advice before the price rise so not sure now what his opinion is. So unsure what's the best action to take. I was only £97 month until the latter part of last year. Our son came back to live with us last April as he was unwell and left again in February this year. Between April and possibly Oct/Nov last year we must have used more power so they increased our payment to £133 month at that point but now up to £346. I must phone Octopus but have delayed doing this as so many people probably still trying to get through. Maybe I'll try on Tuesday then send them an email if I can't get through. Many thanks for any advice. Greatly appreciated!
