How many do they need what sort of spec.
If happy with 3-4year old then batches coming off lease are often available.
Budget per machine? (might find new)
to get an idea of pricing for some dell (ebay often cheaper)
dell outlet for nearly new/returns etc.
dell refurbished for older
I have been looking at the HP 400/600/800 ranges with at least i5-8500 around £200-£250
laptopsdirect seem to get decent reviews from the people on HUKD.
What's wrong with the ones in use? there may be upgrade paths
if basic use and not too old, a memory and SSD upgrade may bring them back to life.0 -
Do Dell do refurbished workstations? Can only see laptops and desktops on their site @getmore4less
Given the crazy prices for workstations I've always wondered if it would ever be worth buying one that's a couple of years old -v- buying a new high end desktop. The only people I've known with proper workstations were actuaries running some fairly crazy longevity models and such but to be honest I don't think they knew what they were asking for and they got whatever they asked for because, well they're actuaries. Did see one guy using excel models on a £50k workstation and so showed him how the same model runs 90% as quickly on a £800 laptop.0 -

Also the super deduction for Corporation Tax only applies to new purchases, but not for second hand, so it makes even more sense for a business to buy new.0 -
Do warranties and or consumer protection rights apply to companies?? Oh and how many is "update all there(sic) PC equipment" I take it they don't have an IT / Corporate Procurement department, your thread is very short on detail.

What do you think the difference is between desktop and workstation?

This is the employers responsibility, let them sort this out, especially given its a B2B transaction.

There is no universal definition and lines get blurred but I'd expect a desktop to have an "i" series processor, a workstation to have "xeon", often with more than one CPU too. ECC RAM of at least 64gb, our machines have 256gb whereas desktops are normally non-ECC and normally max out at 64gb
In general though they are just made of much more robust, and expensive, standard of kit. If you look at Dell, their top workstation computer from the standard configurator is £75k (or £115k if you believe its not on sale at some point) and that's before monitors etc.. There are also custom builds for more... they are just in a different league to desktops but clearly heavily the case of diminishing returns and a £150 class 20 1TB SSD is probably fine for most of us rather than the £750 for a class 40/50 1TB SSD2 -
