The OP is in Northern Ireland where the system is a bit different to that of GB. I’m currently looking at switching to SSE Airtricity, as I think they have a new customer discount, which makes their rate quite a bit cheaper than everyone else.macman said:No, stay on SVT with your current supplier.Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0 -
Unless there's a reason to stay with current, then why wouldn't you switch? It's the same product after all. https://www.consumercouncil.org.uk/consumers/save-money/energy/considering-switching-supplier

Because there are no new tariffs at present that are cheaper than SVT under the cap.guiriman said:Unless there's a reason to stay with current, then why wouldn't you switch? I'm in the process of switching from PowerNI to SSE as they are giving a 20% discount off the unit rate for a 1 year contract. Seemed a no brainer as PowerNI have just put up the price by over 21%.0

A couple of questions:
1. what is SVT?
2. is the 20% discount not a "sweetener" as they will raise the rate dramatically after 1 year, much like gas has risen?

I have been moving every single year for the last few years, always to the cheapest provider. Last year I went with Electric Ireland as they provided a 10% discount and a £40 Tesco voucher, a few weeks ago I went back to SSE onto their 20% discounted rate and once that one year is up I will again move to the cheapest alternative. It's absolutely painless, no cut in supply, there are no differences in quality etc... so why not always go with the cheapest?1 -
SVT is standard variable tariff which we don't have in NI.1

The only pain point I've had (with more than one of them) is that their systems can't seem to understand how you can be both a new and a former customer so you may have to set up a new login with a different username and email address or go through the slow process of getting customer service to merge your two accounts
