Copper Network Replacement

As I am sure most are aware Openreach are gradually getting rid of the copper wire network and replacing it with FTTP (fibre to the premises) as Virgin use now, this means that BT and all the broadband providers that use BT’s copper network will be providing FTTP only.

I am currently with Virgin and have their 1Gig fibre, the point of entry is upstairs on the landing while I use the connection wirelessly downstairs. I am not keen on having another whole drilled in a wall to change the point of entry unless I know if other FTTP providers will be able to use the same point of entry.  Does anyone know if once all providers have changed to FTTP whether they will be able to use the same point of entry as my current Virgin one?

Thanks
Silentoter

  • According to "Increase Broadband speed":
"A fibre cable is fed from the nearby Connectorised Block Terminal to the outside of the premises, either from a nearby telegraph pole or underground chamber. This follows the path of the existing (copper) telephone cable. In our case, a hole was drilled to the outside of the property with a fibre cable fed from the ONT modem to the Customer Service Point outside. There’s usually flexibility on where the ONT modem is installed, so you do not have to locate it next to your existing telephone point."

That's not gong to work in my house, the phone cable enters via a duct in my garage and then is routed through floor joists and stud walls, I can't see Openreach ripping up floors and walls to route the cable, they will surely just ask which room I want it in and drill through the wall?

  • Virgin drilled a whole in the footpath in front of my premises to connect me to. Where I live there is only Virgin for fast fibre connection or 10mb with BT and everyone else. Being a home worker that has to connect to work via a VPN the others just aren’t fast enough. I can’t wait for the market to open up with lots of other FTTP providers and will be delighted if they can all use the present point of entry.

When you say point of entry, do you mean the actual fibre between your property and the street, or just the hole in the wall? The answer to the first is no, and to the second, probably not
  • The hole in the wall and not the fibre between the property and the street. If there is some doubt whether future fibre providers could use the current hole then I will leave it until it is known for certain, no need to have another hole drilled needlessly I can manage as I am.
