My granddaughter is hoping to attend a Summer school in USA and will require access to some funds. I don’t know how safe it will be to take cash. She is too young for a credit card or Travellers cheques. Can anybody suggest a solution?

Never used one, but the fairFX here while you need to be over 18 says you can link a second card for a child.

Revolut seems like it would be a fit as they have a "Junior" account.
You would probably also want an account yourself so you can top her up and convert pounds to dollars to send her, etc (with no exchange fee, so that's a win). She can withdraw dollars without hefty credit card withdrawal charges too.1 -
