If your car was in a dealership long term, would you renew your insurance or does the dealerships insurance cover it?
Owner has had to insure another car while waiting for hers to be fixed, which could be months

Back in my day when customers were provided with courtesy cars by either ourselves or the insurers then the customers insurance would be transferred to the courtesy car. Very important when someone managed to demolish a row of 7 or 8 vehicles whilst under the influence.
We supplied the details of the car to the insurance company and had to call when the customer collected his car after repair to inform them.
The car being repaired was covered by our insurance whilst in for repair

Have you SORNed the car? If not then you are legally obliged to keep the car insured yourself.
If you are SORNing the car then you could choose not to insure it (assuming its not got finance secured on it) but would be sensible to advise the garage to ensure they dont move it onto the road without the appropriate measures. There will always be a potential risk that the dealership doesnt have appropriate insurance and is on the borderline of going bust and so keeping insurance could be prudent but most probably would accept that risk (or not think about it)

The dealership insurance will only cover it against their liabilities (i.e. they damage it), which wouldn't include theft or damage by outside act (e.g. wind blowing down tree or vandalism).
So you'd probably want to keep at least 3rd Party, plus if it's parked on a public road (some dealerships overspill) it would need to be taxed and insured to remain legal and the dealership insurance wouldn't cover this aspect.0 -

A blown up engine won't stop some toe rags from nicking it and stripping it for spares, depending on the car. They could just tow it away.1

Also, it needs to be taxed and insured even if it's off the road, unless it's SORNed,0 -
