I am buying a new car from a dealership who was pushing the 71 plates on me, but as I am getting no discount I said I would wait until 1st March for the new 22 plates. I am travelling 6 hours by train to collect the vehicle as I have moved from when I originally ordered the car.

Does anyone know if they can get the new plates on the day they are released (1st March 2022)?

I am asking because the dealership has booked me in on the 1st for collection, but worried that they won't have plates to hand on the release date?

My biggest fear is having to take a 6 hours train right back home. Just need some reassurance that this fast turnaround is possible.

EDIT: The dealership is MERCEDES or Sytner

Ring the dealer and ask them.

I would be surprised if they couldn't make their own plates.

Oh! I didn't know they might be able to make their own plates in-house. That gives me some reassurance.

When I ask this question to them, they always carefully word it "let's aim for the 1st March". This was the only issue I saw coming up, that they couldn't get the number plates that quick.

I thought all dealers provided plates with their new cars

  • New reg cars can be picked up from 1st March, so shouldn’t be an issue. I would check with them before doing the 6 hour journey tho

The Dealer can make the "22" plates and fit them to your car now.  Then park the car back wherever they would have parked it anyway.

22 plates were released in November 2021.  Dealers will be well versed in the procedure.

The only thing that would concern me is the "lets aim for the 1st March" On a couple of occasions I have had my pick up date for a new car moved back because it did not get to the dealer in time. Delays with delivery etc. Ring the dealer 23rd to 25th to confirm car is there and that it will be ready for 1st March. That way you will know.

Worst was for the wife's 50th Birthday. Meant to pick up on 1st Sept and it did not turn up for another week. Dealership kept phoning my house and leaving messages to pick it up. Impossible as we were on a 3 week cruise! We then made them wait till 01 Oct.

  • 22 plate or not, it will still be used when driven off the forecourt!

Registration numbers are released to dealers in plenty of time. Most dealers make their own plates these days - it is very lucrative. I remember a customer who owned a motor accesories business who would sell you a set of plates for £5.00 this was in the 1990s.

He ordered a new car and they wanted to charge him £25.00 for plates. He refused to pay, I think he finished up fitting his own on the forecourt.
