The only thing a smart meter has done for me is reduce the working out of the kWh's used down from two meters to one meter, the gas meter.

Until it loses the connection and tells you the same reading every day... and is it just me or are Smart gas meters almost impossible to read in the dark? I push the button several times to find the meter reading, try to take a picture of it and it goes off just when the camera flashes to illuminate it and I end up with a blank display as it's literally on for about 2 seconds.

They are battery powered so tend to be set very conservatively when it comes to the display and illumination.

Fortunately mine displays the reading with a single button press, and is visible on my IHD anyway.
