Problem with new tariff

I changed onto a new tariff on 5th. I've had an email tonight saying that tariff is a smart meter tariff and if I don't want to go onto a smart meter then I need to discuss a different plan.
I've been onto BG chat and he made no sense at all. Basically said ignore email as that tariff will still work without a smart meter.
I don't want to lose this tariff, its a good rate. What should I do?

Oh, and I wasn't told I needed a smart meter and can't see anything on the tariff information0

Which tariff are you on (it will have a name)? Is it "Online fixed energy sep 2023" as you posted here?

Have you read through all the Terms and Conditions of the tariff you signed up to? They often bury it deep in there.
If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -

I went back onto chat and finally got someone who could string a sentence together. He said they are promoting smart meters but he's put a note on the account to say I don't want one and I can stay on the same tariff, same rates but no smart meter and to basically ignore the email.1

I'm not entirely sure i trust anything with the online chat but what choice do we have! What's the worst that could happen...are smart meters that bad? I pay by variable direct debit and he said that would remain the same.0

Nothing wrong with smart meters. They measure your usage, stop (in the main) the hassle of having to give monthly reads and come with a marmite nifty display that shows your usgae details.

If you are lucky, the display unit even shows your meter readings. Mine does. Much easier than going outside.
