    I didn’t I let them know in emails before hand!
    And did they acknowledge your request to cancel, and agree to it?  If they didn't, then your cancellation wasn't implemented and you're still liable for the payments.

    Unless you can negotiate something from them, you're on the hook for 12 monthly payments.
    And cancelling the DD is not likely to have put them in the mood for negotiation.
