Cancelled home repair cover policy

Hi
ive cancelled my direct debit and tried to email the provider Your Repair to inform them several times. You couldn’t cancel it online and there was no help or advice on how to do this so I cancelled the direct debit (twice as they still tried to take it out).

I got an email today saying they would be passing my unpaid dd on tk a debt management agency so called them and they tried to say I didn’t cancel it within 14 days and yet have never made a claim and it’s cover I chose and don’t need. My energy bills have increased as has everyone’s and I’m on my own and can’t afford it.

I had to hang up in the end and have emailed them again. It’s shocking sharp practice at best! Any advice or help please?! Thanks.

    Did you read the terms?

It says here (assuming it's the same contract as yours):

"You are free to leave the agreement at the end of each contract term by giving us notice (by telephone or in writing) in the last 28 days of that year."

They don't need to provide an online option.

In that case you're tied to the contract for the full term, then you can cancel. One thing you should never do is just simply stopping your DD, that's just asking for trouble.

Cancelling a direct debit doesn't end your contract.
Just not paying for something doesn't make it go away.
You should have phoned them to end the policy as above.

Doesn't make it a sharp practice.
  • Doesn't sound like sharp practice to me.  It looks like you signed up to a year's cover and now want to exit the contract early.  As advised above, cancelling direct debits doesn't end a contract.
  • I didn’t I let them know in emails before hand!

The point is you agreed to a contract for 12 months so you are stuck with that.

You could only cancel it within the first 14 days after signing up, which you didnlt do.

You now need to pay for the whole year but remember to advise them you wish to cancel within the last 28 days of the  contract term.

You said in the OP that you tried to email.
Not that you informed them you wish to cancel.

As others have said you need to do what the contract says and if the contract was for 12 months you need to make 12 payments.

And did they acknowledge your request to cancel, and agree to it?  If they didn't, then your cancellation wasn't implemented and you're still liable for the payments.

Unless you can negotiate something from them, you're on the hook for 12 monthly payments.
