To get it straight - you have one son living with you, paying keep and working on the energy guzzling PC and another at Uni?

£120 in car insurance a MONTH?!

    What are you driving?

Is that so high because of your sons on the insurance?  You might need to take them off, unless they pay the difference.

You are using about 9000kwh electricity a year - even with 3000kwh for the computers that leaves 6000kwh going somewhere else which I would expect a family of 3 with gas heating to be able to halve that as a reasonable aim.
But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,
Had the whole of their cash in his care.

  • Looking at it from another perspective; can DH get any paid work, even if it's short term, to help offset the higher electric costs?

Do you feel your son is contributing adequately to the fuel bill if he is gaming a lot?
If your husband's PC uses an 'obscene amount of energy' why can't he chick his emails/jobs on a different pc?

Silly Q - are you paying your council tax over 10 months or 12?  You can ask to pay over 12 months if you are currently paying for 10.  Ok, it doesn't save money, but it might make the amount of monthly outgoing you have to find lower.

Job-hunting is almost a full time job in itself.  My son has just started a job after almost 16 months unemployment, and I know how demoralising it is.  I hope your OH is lucky enough to find something that suits him soon.  However, if his  PC is eating obscene amounts of electric, maybe the cheapest thing would be to buy another PC that doesn't use as much power!  I'm sure he'll be up for that!!!

i would suggest energy or debt free board for specialist advise However we use annually gas 11094 elect 4625 kwh 205pm, 3 bed semi new build 3 adults water 30pm on meter. Look up  The epc cerificate https://www.gov.uk/buy-sell-your-home/energy-performance-certificates for your home this will have kwh for heating and water. We have 3 high powered PC Water cooled left on all the time  and a further 4 laptops left on all the time.  Agree insurances should be paid annually.  If you are unable to afford upkeep of house you will either have to move or put your prices up But again i would suggest energy or debt free board for specialist advise, we are all in the same boat here as the goalposts have suddenly changed Hope this helps We have just finished supporting both kids at university and this is an expensive time both mine worked in summer holidays which helped.

it took my son a year to find job he was into after uni so i feel your pain. The EPC will also show what measures you can take to better insulate your home

  • Epc gives us an E rating but I think it was done before we bought the house, some of the measures it suggests we have already done such as double glazing (we got the last windows done last summer) and the boiler replacement whic was done 3 years ago.

others measures involve a lot of money we just don’t have right now, need ot get ourselves  financially straightened out first as the improvements we already bought came at a cost.

i googled this about servers Calculating Server Power Usage. For instance, one server can use between 500 to 1,200 watts per hour, according to Ehow.com. If the average use is 850 watts per hour, multiplied by 24 that equals 20,400 watts daily, or 20.4 kilowatts (kWh)./ So equivalent to 5-12 100 watt lightbulbs tbh i am impressed by your grocery spend we are about 300-400pm including takeaways. I think the energy forum will help and  at least on a domestic tariff rather than business you are able to fix prices.  I think also the debt forum will suggest splitting you domestic costs away from business by deducting your pay first with your business costs The sooner you go on debt/energy forum the better as compared to where we were you are in better position than we were and now we are debt free
