A prepacked whole salmon with 2.7kg label was actually a 1.65kg salmon

Dear fellow members,
Hope you're doing well and healthy in current Covid climate.
I bought a prepacked "Reduced" Whole Salmon today at Tesco Extra. The label was as below.

I thought, Tesco Salmon was typically £15/kg, this pack was £7.20/kg. It was an absolute bargain and bought it immediately. When I reach home, I have a weird feeling that the salmon is under weight and therefore I put it on my kitchen scale. To my shock, below was what I found.

I could not believe my eyes and tested again on bathroom scales, it was definitely less than 2kg. I immediately rushed back to Tesco and luckily they refunded me.
My suspicious was, 2.7kg was the whole salmon before gutted, 1.65kg I got was a gutted salmon without head, tail and bones. I would have understood this if I pick a whole salmon from the fish monger counter and the staff cut the salmon for me. But for a prepacked salmon with labeled as 2.7kg, my impression was the pack actually weighted 2.7kg.
I don't normal check the weight and I believe many people didnt too. Therefore, I hope to share my learning so that you wont make the same mistake.
Have a nice weekend.

They rushed back to store and got a full refund.Grumpy_chap said:Has the OP raised this with the Tesco store and what did they say?
i suspect they are correct and its weight for whole salmon on packet but actually gutted and prepped. But doesn’t sound like they opened it to check.2 -
I went to the customer service counter, they asked me to check with the fish monger counter instead. I didn't want to have more hassle to go fish monger counter, but just want to get rid of this salmon.jon81uk said:

What is the point of going to fish monger counter?
They most probably tell me what I have suspected (2.7kg was the whole salmon before gutted, 1.65kg I got was a gutted salmon without head, tail and bones.). Then, in this case, this "reduced" salmon would be £11.78/kg, not a massive discount compared to those non-"reduced" salmon side, but I get the chance to pick the salmon side that I like and at a size and weight I wanted. Unless there is a huge discount, 1.65kg is too much for me.
Even if I caught them deliberately misleading people, there is nothing I can do too. Also, I visit this Tesco Extra often, I didnt want to offend the staff there that they turn black face on my next visit.
So, best case scenario is to return and refund, though I wasted 1 hour rushing back and forth.0 -
Maybe so that the fishmonger counter can check the weight on their scales to confirm your complaint...starkiwi26 said:

Unless of course, Customer Services have a set of weighing scales on their counter...
Ours don't.1 -
Is it possible this is simply a typo on the original label?
The OP weighed 1.65 kg. That rounds up to 1.7 kg.
If the counter staff typed that into the label as 2.7 kg, it is a simple data input human error and nothing more (though obviously in the store's favour).
The weight per kg is likely programmed, so the price is then automatically calculated.
When the price change for end-of-day was done, I doubt the counter staff weighed it again.
Could be nothing more than a mistake.0 -
Of course it's a mistake. The idea that Tesco has deliberately taken a corporate decision to sell underweight salmon is pretty preposterous.Grumpy_chap said:

Need to call the papers, breaking news shocked customer "rushes" back to Tesco with under weight Salmon.
When asked to comment they stated definately something fishy going on here.

Just to clarify, I took the photo when I was at supermarket because I was so happy that I found a bargain and I cannot wait until I reach home to share with family

Finding an in-store bargain is a luck, not happening everyday0
