They say there is no such thing as a stupid question - this may be the exception to the rule !!!  :D
It's not available as an app for smartphone or tablet - that much I get...........although I can access the UK.GOV website on my iPad.
It has to be completed 2 days before flying home - that much I also undrtstand.
When it's approved I'll get an (almost immediate) email response to that effect.
At that point I'll want to download and print off a paper copy for the Spanish airport - can my hotel oblige if I forward them the email  - and/or how would I transfer the QR code to my Apple smartphone ?
This is all new to me - obviously !!!

Well thats up to the hotel to decide.

And surely the email address they email it to is set up on your phone as well?

TBH the paper copy would suffice anyway, the airline wont take it off you (you can just show them the document off your tablet/phone too so a printout isnt really necessary either unless the airline insist) and the form is linked to your passport so the chances of you being asked to reproduce anything at Passport Control of the UK airport is near nil.

Don't need to print a copy, just save it on your phone, save to iCloud Drive or Google Drive or similar and make sure available offline, then have ready to show.
You could ask hotel to print, but we didn't bother, completed it on iPhone and showed at airport on iPhone.
Don't think for the UK one anyone actually scanned the QR, the airline just wanted to see you had done it.

The UK know if you have done the form or not when they scan your passport either at the E Gates or the manned desks. No need to produce it.

    I assumed that.

I did need to show the airline on check in that I had completed it, but they just looked at the name on my phone screen from memory.

One entry to Spain it was a seperate checkpoint for the covid related stuff though.

Yes on my three returns trips back to the UK they just got me to open it up on my phone. Some people had tablets and did the same. And some people had printouts. Not the end of the world if the OP cant get it printed.

"Well thats up to the hotel to decide."
Obviously - I can't think of any reason why a hotel would refuse such a basic reasonable  request as a service to a guest.

Yes ......... but I would like a paper copy backup -  but won't have a printer.

Any shop with 'Xerox' or similar will be able to print it if the hotel can't or won't.

In general, there are quite a few of them in most places.

On entry to Spain it is helpful to have the Spanish locator form printed out as those who had their QR codes on paper were getting through quicker than those fiddling with their phones

Return to UK, the QR code on phone was checked at check-in but not on landing as it is all linked to your passport number.

To be fair, people can also fiddle with paperwork, if you are organised and have the window already open it makes very little difference
  • For some having the peace of mind of having a printed copy in case you phone battery goes flat is reassuring.
This was particularly important when there were long (4 hours +) queues at airports last year - however from my experience, I don’t think this it is an issue recently.
