Car from private seller
Options
Having bought a car yesterday from a private seller, and covering less than 200 miles, the car has developed a major fault which essentially renders it unusable.. fault is with the transmission which the previous owner told me (with witnesses) had been rebuilt... where do I stand?

Transmission rebuilt but that may not have been the issue or it has now developed a new issue?Unless any warranty was transferable then you will need to get it inspected fully.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0

The car has a well known fault with the gearbox, getting them rebuilt cures it.0 -
Do you have the receipt from the company that rebuilt the transmission, give them a call see what they say ?
If you can prove the transmission is not rebuilt then you may have some leverage, but the receipt would be my first call , although any warranty may not be transferable.
what is the make , model , price paid ? It may be a case of walk away.1 -

No receipt, just the sellers word, which rightly or wrongly I took in good faith. Short test drive seemed fine, less than 100 miles later, here I am looking at a 400 pound bill. Just over 4k was paid for the vehicle.0 -
Did it say it on the ad ? Did you have a copy of the ad ? £400 is a low bill for a transmission rebuild ? It might be easiest to suck it up, thats less than the difference between a trade a private sale so you are still quids in.2

The bloke said it in person both times I viewed the car, and there are witnesses to the fact.0 -
OP, have you spoken to him? Ask him for the rebuild paperwork and chase it up with the garage that did the rebuild. If he doesn't have the paperwork, then he probably didn't have it done, and was telling porkys.1

Already established he doesn't, as I say, I took it in good faith, wrightly or wrongly.... I'm just thinking with there been evidence to the fact he said it on multiple occasions and it been so soon....0 -

Have a look and see if if the garage that rebuilt it offered a transferable warranty, but otherwise it is an unfortunate case of having to take it on the chin.0 -
"But less than 24 hours less than 100 miles? Surely I have some sort of leg to stand on..."
Do you have it in writing that the gearbox was rebuilt ?, do you want to pay for an expert witness and take him to court and still risk losing ?
You don't have many private sale rights but the car should match the description, you still need to be willing to put your money up and take the risk of losing. Have you spoke to the seller ?0
