  • @EssexHebridean It reminds me of the draft cold homes I grow up in the 70s & 80s singly glazed with the only heat source was an open fire in the living room, as a child I can't remember having a problem with the cold, and people in general just wore extra clothing even indoors like Hertslad is doing now, and damp wasn't a big problem back then. I can still remember in 89 when the council started fitting double-glazed windows and gas central heating, but as we just brought are home, so we had to do without until 94, but I can remember many of the older generations complaining that central heating made the air too dry which gave people dry coughs and even asthma, even are GP claimed it did and in fact still does.

I'm very surprised Hertslad can not get a grant for cavity and loft insulation, as I know many homeowners personally who have all the work done for free along as you're over 65 or and a state benefit, that's how I got a grant to pay for my solar system.

He's probably well off if he's saving thousands a year by not having heating on

To clarify, my house is timber framed with insulation in the walls, as added when built. The loft is fully insulated. What does it count for, though? There's almost no heat to lose! The glazing is all single, though.

Hardergamer - did you get a grant for panels which you bought yourself, or was a contractor involved? I am not on benefits.

You don’t necessarily have to be on benefits. I’ve just sent off the information for a local council energy efficiency grant which I am eligible for if my house has a low E PG rating and my income is less than 30K.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

It’s more a case of “how so much cold manages to get in” to be honest - insulation works both ways remember. As I said previously - I would quite literally have to leave all the windows open for it to ever get that cold indoors here!

  • It was a local council energy and home improvement type grant, it can be for many things that you need to do to your home, mine was for charging my modified ebike, so I can stay mobile with no lower right leg, you just need to get a person in the council who agrees with you on what you need or want, I received a small grant, so I could DIY my own solar system, which was ment to only put power into my shed to charge my ebike, I did make a mistake you do not need to be on any benefits.

2 pairs of socks.  One foot has thick wooly sock as outer layer, not found any for sale on the net as in 2022 the online clothing market is about think material cheap clothing.

    Thick jogger bottoms.

Tshirt, jumper and cardigan type top available but currently only need tshirt and cardigan type top..

Plan to get some gloves, and have a wooly hat to wear as well if needed.

Room temp without heating and PC off (when in bed or not here) 13-14C, with PC on 15-16C.  No room heating used at all.

Thats good but council stuff varies from council to council, with energy support it varies hugely.

    Get the knitting needles out.
Or try outdoor shops like George Fisher in Keswick.
I remember the socks my mother used to knit for our walking boots. You needed a pair of boots 2 sizes bigger than normal to accommodate them! (It's possible we wore 2 pairs - I'm going back a bit.)

Found this. We have a 24kw conventional boiler.

How much does it cost to run gas central heating per hour? If you're connected to mains gas, you're looking at a cost of around 11.51p per kilowatt-hour. This means that if you have a 24 kW boiler, you can expect to pay around £2.76 per hour to run it on mains gas. Information correct as of the October 2022 price cap

We are doing this now. Timer set to come on 3 times a day for 1 hour although heating the water is only for half an hour at a time. The thermostat is set at 18° so it isn't on constantly, we live in a terraced house in London so not the coldest compared to others.
