  • 1500w is 1.5kw which is 1.5 units on your meter so if you pay 20p per kWh, it’s costing 30p per hour to run

It could cost less if the heater has a thermostat setting to allow you to adjust the warmth of the room.
Curiousgirl1's calculation assumes the heater will be running 100% of the time, so gives a maximum hourly cost.

In a smallish room, with the thermostat set low, I would expect the heater to keep cutting in and out to maintain temperature.
Of course, it all depends how cold the room gets and how warm you want it to be!!

However much the oil-filled radiator costs to run, there's a good chance it will cost more than Rosie1001's storage heaters do.

If it comes on for 10min per hr then the cost will be 1.5x10/60 = 0.25 unit.
Put it on and use a stop watch to count all the on time, it should be less in the second hr when its just being topped up.

Likely - but her 25 year old storage heaters will be unlikely to be providing a level of comfortable heat through into the evenings. My guess is that the oil filled rad is being used to take the chill off late in the day, or perhaps for a short time in a bedroom where storage heaters don't really work too well? (Particularly poorly insulated very old ones!)

    It’s a enquiry for a elderly relative …

They tend to use one room only in the evening after their heating goes off …

    thanks for the replies

Assuming their heating is central heating they would probably be better off running the heating for an extra couple of hours.

1.5kW from the oil filled radiator probably won't go far unless it's very mild and / or a very small room.
Assuming they have gas central heating, it would probably be better to keep the boiler on and to turn down the TRVs in the other rooms.  The oil filled radiator will probably have to keep running the whole time, but they'd get around 6kW of heat for the same money with gas.

A heated blanket would be a better investment, use around 150w.
