I tried various things, including pepper, garlic, spikes, mesh, etc. But I found once a cat had chosen a spot, it came back like clockwork once a week to do its business in the same place.
I didn't try high frequency repellers as I read they don't work, and I was worried I might be able to hear it myself.
Anyway, finally I tried a Pestbye water jet repeller. This did the trick, and is the only thing I've found to work. The cat that had been going in the same spot every week, seemingly with nothing I could do to stop it, got hit by the water just once and never came back.
