Universal Credit not crediting Class 3 NI?

Hi,

I've just been having a look at my online HMRC account and have noticed gaps in my NI record for two years, 2019-2021. The account says no credits were made but I was on Universal Credit for this period and they should have paid the class 3 NI credits. Has this happened to anybody else, particularly regarding Universal Credit, and any idea how to get it sorted?

There are numerous reports of NI credits not getting recorded correctly. DWP and HMRC will blame each other. Start by asking DWP if they have reported your entitlement to HMRC. If you get bounced back and forthcoming involve your MP.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

I'm in the same boat and chased this up last November, and was told they are still prioritising the new pension claims

    No update since then

You are not alone. The standard response is that they are aware there is an issue and a process is in place to remedy it, with those cases closest to SPA being prioritised. No indication is given if your specific case is one of those actually affected by this 'known issue' or if it is some other completely unrelated issue, nor any indication as to a timescale for when it may be resolved. Overall I'd say it's a pretty unsatisfactory situation.
Please keep us updated with the steps you have take to try to reach a resolution and how you get on.

    Very understated description!

Yes, unfortunately I didn't think I was allowed to use the type of language I'd normally use to describe it here on a public forum

  • Same here. Have been on UC for three years and so far no NI class 3 credits. Have chased at least 1/2 dozen times and still nothing. On one occasion the call handler informed me that there was no such thing as National Insurance credits and that I was getting confused with Working Tax Credits or Universal Credit.

May be time to contact your MP.

Does it affect all NI credit-earning benefits or just UC?

I had a short period of claiming UC where I wasn't entitled to carer's allowance - I was on the phone to HMRC this week and they said that during this time there were no NI contributions recorded and to speak to DWP - so that's my next call over the coming days. I hadn't realised it was a widespread issue - I just thought they'd left me off somehow. I'll feedback what they say when I've spoken to them.
