3 days out is odd, but oversights do happen.  The stores are staffed by humans, not robots!

When shopping in M&S last week I noticed a ready meal dish that was in date, but 'blown'.  I handed it to an assistant for disposal but I'm sure that even if the shelf stacker had missed it, the check out operator wouldn't have (at least in our little store).

On the other hand, some time ago in 'another supermarket' I found a jar of sauce with a 'popped' lid.  I handed it to an assistant, before walking away, but looked back to see her putting the jar back on the shelf.

Supermarkets are very sensitive about such mistakes because one of the big four was handed a multi-million pound fine for getting it terribly, terribly wrong across three stores in Birmingham a few years back. It's a social media nightmare and a real fear for the bigwigs. Head offices just never stop banging on about rotation and food waste and checking and double checking and checking again and documenting it again, and again and again.

M&S's offer is a kind one. And huge points to you for acknowledging it in this way. As others have noted, there is no health risk from drinking the milk and as long as it smells fine and isn't curdling, you'll be fine. Milk is really handy in that way.

Lesson learned: look at the dates when you're buying things :smi:kissing_smiling_eyes:

I've seen shoppers rummaging through shelf items to find the longest date, not caring if the older items are  pushed out of the way/to the back, and then hidden by newer goods.  Blame them, not just the staff.  And always check the dates yourself!  

Add - yes, I do go for the longer date items myself, but I'm careful how I do it.  After all, if everyone just took the items nearest the front of the shelf there wouldn't be any yellow sticker bargains at the end of the day!
