Are Freesat recorders no longer needed. They seem to be not always  available.

Not every channel has catch up. Having it available in one place is more convenient then having to use multiple apps. Quite often catch up content is removed after a set period, on a Freesat recorder it is available for ever.

    So the answer is no.

Also, not everyone has internet - or at least land line internet

I have a Humax Freeview box and it's hardly been used in the last 2 years...
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

We have one also and its used nearly every day. I like being able to skip through the ads on ITV, C4 etc something you cant do by streaming unless you pay.

OP. With the chip shortage there are a lot of items unavailable

As above really - PVRs allow you to 1. keep a program longer than it is available on catch-up and 2. whizz through the adverts and 3. watch recordings when your internet is down!

Exactly the same with us.   It's great for skipping the ads!

Record everything on the Humax. Then as others say skip the ads. No time constraints either.

I've just moved from Virgin Tivo to Freeview with a recorder - I can't imagine not having one - I like having a bank of things I've recorded for myself to scroll through. There's far too much wading through everything else and unhelpful "recommendations" to pinpoint my personal faves on catch-up.

Like the OP I found all the usual places were out of stock of what I needed presumably due to the chip issue. Instead I bought a reconditioned Humax from eBay which has been fine - and was cheaper anyway.

We have a Manhattan freeview pvr and use it most of the time.

It comes into its own when watching channels with adverts as we set a programme to record and then go into the recording after about 15 minutes and gradually catch up to live transmission as we fast forward through the adverts.
